Bunion surgery (Hallux valgus correction)

Facts

  • General anesthesia
  • One-day surgery
  • Procedure lasts 60 min
  • Recovery in 6 weeks

The disease is manifested by bruises, redness of the skin, swelling and pain, the big toe gradually bends and deforms - a bony bump develops.

The cause is usually a hereditary weakening of the ligament, often worsened by inappropriate footwear, overloading and injuries.

  • Conservative treatment consists of wearing special splints (correctors).
  • An operation is performed for larger deformities. A part of the bone is resected, so that the toe can be straightened (corrective osteotomy).

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The patient is discharged from hospital after 24 hours.

After the operation the leg must be spared. Special shoes that take the weight off the toes are worn for 6 weeks so there is no need to use crutches. The foot can be fully weight-bearing in 8 weeks.
